Campus Community,

Earlier this week we celebrated the extraordinary legacy of Sarah Bennett Holmes with the 30th annual Sarah Bennett Holmes Luncheon hosted by the UK Women's Forum.

Sarah Bennett Holmes was a force to be reckoned with.

Although she wasn’t a native of Kentucky, she embodied the spirit and fortitude of this great Commonwealth.

After earning two degrees from the University of Kentucky, she served as our Dean of Women and established a remarkable legacy.

She was unwavering in her pursuit to advance women’s rights. She was bold, determined and compassionate as she advocated for, and later enforced, campus regulations that supported female students. She was responsive to the world around her, creating innovative work programs for women during the Great Depression and challenging inequitable housing accommodations.

Sarah Bennett Holmes was, by any definition, consequential.

Today, we are continually reminded of her legacy — we see it in buildings and hallowed halls, awards and certificates.

But it's the women of today who are the greatest stewards of all Sarah Bennett Holmes championed.

Thank you for all you do — seen and unseen — to educate Kentucky’s future and advocate on behalf of your successors, to support those around you and empower their growth.

We are proud to count you as part of our history — a strong and fundamental cornerstone of this powerful place.

Hear women in bourbon.
