Bill Gatton Foundation’s Historic Gift to KY Arts

A Transformational Gift to the Arts

The Bill Gatton Foundation’s $150 million gift — one of the largest in UK’s history — will create a new home for the arts at the University of Kentucky. The project includes a new College of Fine Arts building, a modern performance theater and public greenspace that will anchor a growing arts and innovation corridor along South Broadway. This investment reflects Bill Gatton’s enduring belief that Kentucky deserves world-class opportunities and facilities, and it will expand what is possible for our students, faculty and community for generations to come.

A New Home for the College of Fine Arts

  • The gift will fund a new College of Fine Arts building, a several-hundred-seat theater and a pavilion with sculptures and greenspace along South Broadway.
  • The complex will sit near the School of Art and Visual Studies, the Gray Design Building, Rupp Arena, the Central Bank Center and the Distillery District, creating a growing arts and innovation corridor for Lexington.

Expanding What's Possible

  • UK’s College of Fine Arts is recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in opera, music, dance, theater and the visual arts, yet its current facilities no longer match the talent and capacity of its people.
  • New spaces will strengthen creative education and performance and will expand what students and faculty can achieve.
  • Bill Gatton invested in projects that shape Kentucky’s future, including facilities and scholarships that opened doors for students with promise and those with financial need. His philanthropy was always guided by the same principle: Kentucky deserves the very best.

FAQs

What is this gift and how will it be utilized?

  • The Bill Gatton Foundation has announced a $150 million gift, accepted by the UK Board of Trustees at its December 2 meeting.
  • It will go toward the construction of a new College of Fine Arts building and several-hundred-seat theater along South Broadway next to the Gray Design Building and near the School of Art and Visual Studies Building on Bolivar Street.
  • The project would also include a pavilion with sculptures and greenspace.
  • The new complex will also be within walking distance of the Gatton Park at Town Branch, Rupp Arena, Central Bank Center and the  Distillery District.
  • The city is planning additional investments in this area, creating an exciting corridor and entryway into the campus for arts, innovation and entertainment.

Why is this needed?

  • The UK College of Fine Arts is nationally and internationally recognized for its proud tradition of excellence in opera, music, dance, theater and the visual arts.
  • Students, faculty and professionals representing UK have performed on stages across the country and around the globe.
  • But current facilities don’t match the talent and capacity of our people.
  • These new facilities will expand what is possible for the College of Fine Arts but also make room for continued development and investment, along with the city of Lexington, in an increasingly vibrant entertainment and arts corridor of Lexington.

When will construction start and be completed?

  • The design and planning process is underway. UK must receive legislative authorization to issue debt for construction on the project. Those discussions with legislative leaders are underway.
  • The goal would be to complete construction in 2030.

Does this project include the Singletary Center for the Arts and Art Museum?

  • No. That is not included in the initial planning for phase 1 of this initiative.
  • The College of Fine Arts community will be engaged in a conversation not only around how the new facilities will be planned and programmed but also about the future needs around existing performing and arts spaces currently housed at the Singletary Center.
